Speaker: Captain Dave Anderson,
Dolphin Safari, Dana Point, CA

Using a consumer digital video camera to produce this documentary, first time filmmaker Captain Dave Anderson was awarded second place in the People's Choice Award from the prestigious International Wildlife Film Festival (IWFF) in Missoula, Montana on Monday, May 3rd. IWFF is known as the "Sundance of wildlife films", attracting about 10,000 people to its annual week of screenings, workshops, seminars and Montana-style networking. What is remarkable about this award is that the majority of the other films had large budgets, as well as experienced and extensive production teams.

Anderson spent five years producing the 64-minute film which features spectacular footage of rare and endangered Blue Whales, thousands of wild dolphins, including the Bottlenose, Risso's, Common, Pacific White-sided and Northern Right Whale dolphin. Other whale species featured include Sperm, Gray, Minke, Humpback, Fin and Killer whales and False Killer whales. The Killer whale and Northern right whale dolphin sequences were filmed in Monterey Bay with the assistance of Nancy Black and Monterey Bay Whale Watch.

Over a five-year period, Anderson filmed from the air and underwater and also enlisted the help of whale watch operators between Monterey and San Diego to offer viewers a complete look at the coastal mammals. The Southern California coast is alive, and now, for the first time, viewers can see it for themselves.

This film comes highly recommended by the ACS National Office and offers a unique opportunity to view footage of some species rarely filmed in California such as False killer, Sperm and Minke whales.

The speaker will have copies of the film for sale ($20) at our meeting and through his website at WWW.dolphinsafari.com.
